Introduction

In this intensive, we will experience painting as a meditative practice, as well as learning traditional time-tested approaches to manifesting our vision in paint.

Our emphasis will be on developing personal empowerment to create our own pictures. Learning how to see, and 'learning how to learn'; so we can develop our full artistic potential.

In Detial

This course will introduce painting approaches initially proposed by Max Doerner in the famous 'Methods and Materials of the Artist' (published in 1925) through which he sought to explain the clarity and luminosity of effects seen in the netherlandish painters, obtainable through the 'mixed technique'(mischtechnik) of egg tempera for value modelling, combined with translucent oil glazes. The technique he proposed was then taken to extreme levels of mastery by the artist Ernst Fuchs, who is considered by many to be the godfather of contemporary visionary art, having inspired other such 20th and 21st century masters as HR Giger, Robert Venosa, Alex Grey, Agostino Arrivabene and Oleg Korolev. Fuchs teachings also gave birth to the first art academy dedicated to visionary art, The Vienna Academy of Visionary Art.

Over his artistic development, Daniel Mirante has studied with a number of artists who learnt directly from Fuchs, and in 2012 assisted Fuchs at the Palace Palfy,Vienna. Daniel is a founding faculty member and regular teacher at the Vienna Academy, where he shares over a decade of study of mischtechnik and related painting approaches, particularly applied to the exploration of the world of Imagination (the 'mundus imaginalis') and the wisdom inherent in the worlds sacred symbols (the 'sophia imaginalis'). Daniel instructs with a deep emphasis on both craft and emphasis upon the inherent therapeutic and spiritual dimension of painting.

Daniel will also share some rare information on the use of various natural organic painting materials drawn from his study of 'best practices' recommended by the field of painting restoration and conservation.

Daniel's conviction is that the shared group intention and circle of commitment create a potent learning environment where breakthroughs and rapid learning can occur, where each participant may share their own insight and teaching to each other, recieving the support and group morale to move through challenging spaces in order to develop rapidly.

The learning outcomes from this course are as such:

  • Creating our own paintings

  • Gaining an overview and introduction to the sacred esoteric lineage of visionary art

  • Receiving information about the materials and best practices to make a painting that will endure time without premature degradation

  • Understanding methods and materials of pre 20th century painters, particularly those of the early renaissance and quatrocento (14th century Italy)

  • How to manipulate painting mediums for a variety of painterly purposes

  • Understanding the range of painters pigments and their traditional uses

  • Making paint, both egg tempera, tempera grassa varients, soffio tempera, and oil paint

  • Underpainting, the importance of value modelling and glazing

  • Problem solving, making corrections (pentimento) and evolving compositions.

Prerequisites for participants:

  • The willingness to step into the unknown

  • The willingness to be undone in order to be receptive to new artistic approaches

  • The willingness to confront ones limits, be humble in the learning, and to work with patience (paz-scientia - the 'science of peace') to realise the illusory nature of limits

  • To tighten tight (control) and loosen loose (freedom)
